Let's leave black single women alone

"We've all heard about it. The trite tale of the beautiful, educated, upwardly mobile black woman that has attained every single ideal goal in life, minus one major factor: a black man to marry. Apparently, these women are everywhere, hence article after article dissecting why they're all single and what they need to do i n order to avoid -- gasp -- dying alone. They seem to need books, too. Oh and the occasional special episode of their favorite reality show to boot. By now you would imagine that given both black women and black men -- of varying ages, classes, sexual orientations, and levels of intellect -- have chimed in with their own largely unsolicited advice on the matter that we could collectively move on, or at the very least, elevate the conversation. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened, leaving my wonderful single female friends to continue to be subjected to this same paranoia-themed discussion. This month the Wall Street Journal published a story entitled 'An Interracial Fix For Black Marriage.' The piece is on -- you guessed it -- why black women should look into dating white guys in order to spare themselves the shame of being spinsters. The article was penned by Stanford Law School professor Ralph Richard Banks, who not so coincidentally has a book on the same subject called Is Marriage for White People?: How the African-American Marriage Decline Affects Everyone."

TYLER Shares His thoughts on Days w/ my father..Do YOu know..

"Hey there, guys, DO YOU KNOW? I’m shooting I, ALEX CROSS. It’s a James Patterson book that we’re making into a movie. I can’t remember if I shared that with you or not. On to the reason I’m writing. A few days ago, I was in the car on my way to set when we stopped at a red light. I looked up from my script and saw a father walking across the street holding his son’s hand. The child couldn’t have been more then 2 or 3years old, this kid was giddy with joy. I watched this man and his son go into the park and start running and playing. The light changed and as we drove away, I turned around in the back seat to watch them until they were out of sight. My eyes filled with water, I thought to myself, this is really a strange reaction. I was thinking, why did I have such a strong emotional reaction to this father and son? It didn’t take long for me to realize that it was because I never had those kind of experiences, never knew that kind of unconditional joy, never knew what it felt like to be wanted and adored as a child."

Slideshow: The riots that rocked black America

Getty Images)As the world remains transfixed by the rioting in London, which, for many unfamiliar with the existing tensions there, came out of nowhere, riots are something the United States knows all too well. Prompted largely by racial inequality and poverty, when it comes to those involving African-Americans, it's doubtful that riots, even some of the most well-known, have produced tangible results. Although awareness of the problems may have been temporarily spotlighted, the lasting legacy of many has not been increased racial harmony or economic opportunity. The important lesson to glean, however, from the riots noted here , as well as the many others not mentioned, is that frustration lends itself to violence and, to prevent such outbursts, it is necessary to take a proactive stance against root causes such as poverty and racial inequality before the inevitable occurs."
