Black Poetry Is A Movement | The Urban Daily

Behind every movement is a group of innovators, who helped to define history. Black poetry is no different from any other movement. Black poets used their words to protest against slavery, racism, injustice and sexuality. Here are the poets that spearheaded public opposition against issues facing Black Americans. Watch “Verses & Flow“ Thursdays at 11pm ET to see poetry legends in the making. TELL US: What other poets do you think influenced Black poetry and why? Phillis Wheatley was the first African-American to have her poetry published. One of her works titled On Being Brought from Africa to America, discussed slaves relationships with God and their ideas of religion. Langston Hughes outwardly opposed racial injustice between Blacks and Whites in America. His works influenced the Harlem Renaissance, which encouraged liberal Black art. Maya Angelou supported feminism just as much as she supported Black’s progression in America. Much of her works dabbled into women’s sexuality, spiritual freedom and celebration. Gil Scott Heron was the spoken-word loud mouth. Known for his famous line and poem The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Heron’s work exposed the conditions of ghettos and crooked politics. Nikki Giovanni was inspired to start writing poetry thanks to the civil rights and black power movements. She is known for works that evoke pride for one’s race.

from whence you came..
a friend and lover,
a warm embrace, A souljah. shaped me..n2 his arms and wrapped
the love I had become, Bridges ran across days and days .
.arrived n NYC..where I'm from.. the altitude suddenly waves
from one desination
2 another ..State of minds . .to meet, caressed the lines,
opened..what now is revealed. I escaped all and everything hurt..where my heartfelt wore you,on my lips, ur eyes,
body rhythms..where the Melody spits ..Poetry..where time spoke..
I am a poet..In those mean streets and those days of deadPrez and bullets..
the Gun, what finds ..a man with years under his belt..to rejuvenate..
the brotha had no escape,
did what had 2 be done done.. revitalized..survived..the struggle..
the hustle and black Powers fate.. Sistahs keeping those AFROS.. n shape of what ..
is the move to build BRIDGES and Keep on truckin..Black CEASAR..,King..
and that's Word..signed us ..One movement.. One Power struggle meets..
a match made never to strike
or self distruct..the Masses..we signed..as it's PEACE treaty..

WHAT IS A SISTA GIRLFRIEND....
She owns the world and it's life of others.. a protector, where the Soul leads her.. A sparkle of Champagne, cocktail.. the sound of the wind, she allows you in.. as her hands are felt , the touch of meaning a smile what captures a heart so beautiful.. what saves a human, in need to breathe.. A sigh of relief, the call when there is no one else.. to escape, from drowning n a sea of LOVE.. the pain she relates to, what knows how to give a hug and kiss of approval.. the years we shared where my heart can't do without her companionship.. when I tried to make it through.. past mishaps what has now..become.. the fork at the end of road..
